Shudei (vermillion clay)
About
Tokoname is one of Japan's six ancient kiln sites, producing pottery for over 900 years. The local iron-rich clay, called shudei, is prized for its ability to soften water and mellow tannins. A well-used Tokoname kyusu develops a patina over time that seasons with your tea. The side handle allows a natural wrist-roll pour that controls flow precisely. No glaze is used inside — the raw clay interacts directly with the tea, improving each cup.
Care
Rinse with hot water only. No soap. Allow to air dry. The clay absorbs tea oils over time, which improves the pot.
